Frugal tip Friday - for your burger on Labor Day!

A couple of weeks ago I was making burgers for a little family dinner with Martin's parents. We had organic ground meat, so I mixed the ground meat with half a chopped onion, 1 beaten egg, a pinch of cayenne pepper (more if you like it really spicy!) and breadcrumbs. When I got the breadcrumbs, I noticed that we were almost out.  So I started thinking about when I could pick some up and added another 5$ to our grocery list and budget. Then I looked on the outside of the breadcrumb container and I noticed a huge amount of sodium! I love salt and use it, but I don't need a bunch more than I already sprinkle on dumped into my burger. So I figured, why not dump these into the composter and make my own? How hard can breadcrumbs be, you just need bread!

I pulled out the bread from the fridge (I like to keep our bread cool!). The bread can be handmade or bought in a store. Take four slices of your bread, and put into blender. Add 1 heaping tablespoon of basil, one heaping tablespoon of rosemary and one heaping tablespoon of thyme. (you can use any dried or fresh herbs that you like!) Add a dash of salt and a dash of pepper, and blend! Blend until the breadcrumbs are completely crushed and mixed in with the herbs. And finally add breadcrumbs to your burger and cook!  I added alittle extra cayenne to the breadcrumbs too, and everyone loved them! Making your own breadcrumbs saves you 5$ and is also a great way to control what you are putting into the food you're eating. Burgers are so easy and can be cooked on your stove, your outdoor grill or on your terrace grill! So even if you have a smaller apartment or a large backyard for grilling you can still partake in this Labor Day tradition!

Happy Labor Day to you and your family!

  5. I ran out of bread crumbs the other day and that is exactly what I did...I just blended a couple slices of bread. However, it didn't occur to me to add spices. You're so smart!

  7. If I'm out of breadcrumbs to mix in a recipe, I'll use either crushed Wheaties or Grape Nuts plus spices.
