Frugal tip friday - a frugal tip for your thirst!

I drink alot of water. I love water, especially cold fresh tasting water. Running around so much and jumpingfrom subway to bus to work and back, I was really happy when Martin installed a water filter into
our kitchen sink. It has a reverse osmosis thingy and uses coconut husks to filter the water, fancy and complicated stuff! I just like the water.  After my job got rid of the big Poland spring water cooler, I would buy a bottle or 2 of water every day. I usually spent on top of my tea that I love (and that I know and accept that I am addicted to), at least 5 dollars... just on drinks per day!! Thats 25$ a week on water! With the water filter I started to use old plastic water bottles from the day before, I'd use the bottle and fill it with the filtered water and use it instead of buying a new one. Then I found out that plastic water bottles can leach bpa (bisphenol A) into your water when used.

From wikipedia:
"Bisphenol A is used primarily to make plastics, and products containing bisphenol A-based plastics have been in commerce for more than 50 years. It is a key monomer in production of epoxy resins[6][7] and in the most common form of polycarbonate plastic...Epoxy resins containing bisphenol A are used as coatings on the inside of almost all food and beverage cans, however, due to BPA health concerns, in Japan epoxy coating was mostly replaced by PET film. Bisphenol A is also a precursor to the flame retardant, tetrabromobisphenol A, and was formerly used as a fungicide." While (recycle) type 1,2,4,5 and 6 do not use BPA in their plastics, type 3 and 7 do use BPA and "type 7 and 3 plastics may leach bisphenol A".

Thats pretty scary!! So not to mention the plastic leaching part, its also pretty expensive to constantly be buying bottled water.  A water filer as simple as Brita or Pur will cost you around $25.00 for a home faucet mount, with additional filters at 20$ per filter. It sounds like a lot to start but you've paid for your filter in one week of not buying bottled water every day.

Once we had our filter and I knew I didn't want to use plastics anymore, I found these awesome BPA free Sigg Water Bottles. They are bpa free so they won't leach any weird stuff into your water, and you can fill your water before you leave the house with filtered water. So I got a Sigg. And for some reason, I don't know if this is intended, my Sigg bottle actually keeps my water cool too! A Sigg water bottle costed me 15$ for a large at a local Hallmark store. They are selling them pretty much at every CVS, Walgreens or other drugstore around. Besides the saving money part, and the chemical free health part, there is also the save the environment part...oh and the pretty part!!

Look how cute the Sigg water bottles come!
and they even have kiddie ones!

And one more thing you are doing by switching from these

to these

is helping the environment!!
MSNBC says in an article about plastic bottles:
"The growth has been even more impressive in terms of water bottles sold: from 3.3 billion in 1997 to 15 billion in 2002. But most bottled water is consumed away from home, usually at a park, in an office or even while driving — areas where there's usually no recycling."
you'd be contributing less to a pile like this one
Why not carry around your Sigg Water Bottle instead of a plastic one?

Happy weekend and Friday follow!!

  1. Getting one of those bottles is the best thing I ever did! My water tastes fresher than ever and my recycling bin is a lot less full. Water bottles pollute the earth so much!

  8. I've had a Brita filter for a few years now and I don't know what I would do without it. AND you can get the filters for it at Costco. The refills are like $40, but you like 10 of them. So that is pretty much a year supply. I don't have a Sigg but I do have a Klean Kanteen and I love it!

  9. Love the small Siggs for babies/little ones. I'm glad these types of water bottles are easy to find now. Even a little bit ago, that wasn't the case.

Glad to see things are going well on the blog front!
