Frugal Tip Friday for you bathtime!

Yesterday after work I went home anticipating the newest version of Greys Anatomy to come on. But I didn't feel like just sitting and waiting for it with my glass of red wine.I wanted to relax even further and make a night of my girly me time! So...I decided to start a bath! I love taking baths and I know I take far to few of them! (for the relax factor!)  We had some epsom salts from the grocery store. I was about to pour a cup of those into the tub, but I wanted alittle extra. After discounting pouring organic milk into the tub (which might feel really weird to take a bath in!) I thought about oats. We eat lots of oats in the granola I make for breakfasts, but I got to thinking, what about putting oats in a bath? We do put oats in our soaps and they are exfoliating and soothing. I did some searching online and found that oats are actually used for baths all the time!

Eat More Oats says "Oats have a soothing effect on skin. A decoction added to a bath helps soothe dry skin or itchiness, including such conditions as eczema, psoriasis measles, chickenpox, pityriasis rosea and sunburn."

Herbs2000 says "An emollient and cleansing action is also performed by the oats on the external body. The oats is turned into a decoction and when this is strained into bath water, it will aid in soothing down itchiness and problems linked to skin disorders such as eczema in patients."

So I decided to save myself some money and blend some oats! I used one cup of old fashioned oats and blended them in our blender. I put the oats in the bath along with the epsom salts.  It was a wonderful addition to the bath! All the nice warmth of a epsom salt bath along with the milkiness and smoothness from the oats. This is a great way to save money on your bath! You could even throw in some chamomile tea bags and add that to the relaxation! Put the mixture in a glass jar, add a plaid cloth, some ribbon and a label and you could even make this a great handcrafted holiday gift! Hope you have a great Friday and a wonderful weekend!

Today we have Stephanie Argamaso stopping by to give us one way that she has learned to save. Stephanie lives in the NYC and works full time. She enjoys going on vacations and watching soccer games. Welcome!
Why Change is Always Good

One thing I learned from my dad was to always embrace change - even literally. If there's a penny on a sidewalk, it always goes in my pocket. Then it gets deposited into a special piggy bank at home. It's dedicated just for found money. It doesn't sound like much, but in four years I collected $80, which was a great night out on my vacation last year!

Thanks for stopping by Stephanie! If you would like to contribute to a Frugal Tip or guest post for Simple Living in a Big City please email me at simplelivinginabigcity@yahoo.com

Hope you have a great weekend!

  3. A few years ago I had a bad break out of psoriasis, and I was instructed to take oatmeal baths....I used Aveeno..I never would have thought to use oatmeal! It's the same thing. I used to call it my breakfast bath.
