How to Simplify Your Work Week - Guest Blogger!

How to Simplify Your Work Week

When you think about ways to simplify your life, you should consider addressing that one thing to which you devote much of your time and energy: your job. If you can somehow simplify your work week, then you'll soon enjoy a less stressful routine. You'll have more energy to put into your career, and you'll be able to relax when you return home each evening. Here are five tips to help you simplify your work week:

Get Sleep
This is perhaps the most obvious tip, and yet it's the one we most often ignore. Get enough sleep and follow your sleep routine. If you can be consistent in how much sleep you get, then you can eliminate other stressful factors that can ruin your work week: you won't catch colds as often, you won't feel groggy during your morning commute, and you won't need to rely on caffeine to get you through the day.

Plan Meals
Nothing is more stressful than rushing out the door without breakfast. It's a bad way to start your day, because it interrupts your routine and leaves you wondering how you'll find food and still make it to the office on time. Likewise, struggling to purchase food during your lunch break can be just as disheartening. Why not plan out your breakfasts and pack a sandwich? Buy what you need the weekend before, so you'll never be at a loss as to what to eat. Also, leave yourself one day out of the week to go out to lunch. It'll seem more like a treat and less like a chore.

Simplify your Commute
Commuting can sometimes be the most complicated time of day for us. The roads are crowded. Everyone is trying to eat, drive, and talk on the phone all at once. Minor accidents cause traffic jams at the worst times. And yet, it doesn't have to be like this. If you can keep the phone off until you get to work, then do so. Make sure you eat breakfast at your kitchen table. Always check traffic reports right before you leave the house, and have in mind a number of alternate routes should you need to make a detour. And, of course, try to be as calm as possible. The fewer distracting factors involved in your commute, the simpler and less stressful it will be.
Leave Work at Work
By compartmentalizing different parts of your life, you can control how complicated it is; therefore, leave work at work. However, in this era of constant connectivity, it's difficult to get away. If you absolutely cannot leave work at work, then you should prioritize your tasks. If you need to, bring home busywork that you can do in front of the television and leave the important stuff for when you're at the office.
Relax at Home
Finally, always have something to look forward to once your workday is over. Some prefer steady exercise, others a good drink and a hearty meal. Still others look forward to spending time with their family or their pets. The idea is to reward yourself for a job well done.

  3. I would love to work at work, but I live at work. My husband doesn't quite grasp that. It's true I don't work outside the home, but I do here. The pay sucks so I don't give it my all. :P Just the same...all these apply to the SAHM too. As for "leaving work at work." The SAHM mom needs a window of time that is hers and hers alone. No kids. No husbands. No nothing. And to further that the entire family must wait a full 5 minutes after mom's alone time before they start whining and begging again. hahaha.
