Frugal Tip Friday - for your garbage!

This week I really wanted to write about a frugal tip that is also green. With the oil spill going on, every time I watch the news I'm reminded of the environment and how much I'd like to help the earth in some way. I realized that with a composter, one person can truly make a difference.

Here's how its frugal - we save on buying garbage bags.

Here's how its green - Before our composter, we would throw away 1 bag of garbage, just between the two of us in one apartment every week or two. Most of the time the bag would have alot of food garbage in it. Now, all food garbage as well as butter wrappers, tea bags and biodegradeable plates and cups go into the composter and we only throw away garbage every 2 MONTHS! That means that just from the 2 of us, we went from contributing around 25 bags or more of garbage a year to landfills to 6 bags of garbage a year!! We were talking about it this morning and just knowing that made me feel wonderful! It is truly worth it to get a composter.

Our composter looks like this one:

One of the very cool things about the composter is that is has a compost tea drainer spicket thingy that I can open and use to mix with water and water the plants with on our terrace! They've responded very well to the tea so far.
And you don't have to pay for a composter. Really its just a holding place for food scraps.  All you need is a large pot with a lid for scraps like this one:
It is well worth it and not only are you saving money from garbage bags but you are also "saving" so much of your carbon footprint on our earth:)

Here's Lealu on the terrace with the plants that I just watered with compost tea:) She's saying "are you really taking a picture of me right now? this early in the morning?" or so I am imagine anyway :)

Happy Frugal & Green Tip Friday!

  2. Wow, that is a great idea! I live on 4+ acres and have been going to start a compost pile and just haven't done it. You have inspired me.
    Happy day to you, Sharon

  3. I don't even want to think about how much we are contributing to the landfills with our family of five. How much does that cost, and where do you get them?
