How to keep your doggie out of your bed

We have a small apartment. We have a doggy bed for Lealu and 2 couches for her to choose from to sleep on. When we first got Lealu we had a crate for her and she slept in there all the time. After awhile we started to let her sleep in the bed with us, she'd walk over to our too high for her to jump up bed and I'd say sit, and she would sit so sweetly and then I would pick her up and put her in the bed with us. We loved it, she would keep us extra warm and would cuddle up in between us sometimes. We got rid of her crate, but kept her doggy bed. Well its interesting how you think, o that won't happen to me when you hear stories about other couples sex life, because I've heard from other people not to have your doggy sleep in your bed for fear it would well ruin that, and I was like ha! no way. Let me just this is a sure fire way to nearly ruin your "private time". At first we would just take her out of bed during that time, but that got tiring, and no one wants to plan "private time" all the time! We decided the puppy had to go and sleep on her own at night. Let me tell you, it is so so so wonderful to have my nights with my husband back! I love our puppy, but no more dog hairs in the bed, no more worrying about how dirty she is when putting her in the bed, no more having her jump off the bed for a drink of water and in the middle of night having to jump out of bed and put her back in, no more! Now its just cuddling together and so much more room for us. I feel sorta bad saying it, but its so not worth it to have our pup sleep with us. Now she sleeps on her own and even seems more independent. At 5am though when Martin wakes up, she prances right into the bedroom, sits next to the bed and waits for me to wake up, walk to the couch with a blanket and sleep that extra hour with her. And I do it to, every morning. What can I say, I'm a sucker :)
Do you let your pet sleep in your bed? Or did this happen to you when you first got your puppy or kitty?

  1. I can't believe you so sleep on the couch with her...this is too funny! We went back and forth as well. first his kennel then the floor beside me then in bed with us and now back to the pillow beside me. He's just too big for our little queen bed. Adam couldn't do it any longer! :) I agree is is nice...space...hair...smell! Great post!

  2. Both of our pups sleep in the bed with us, and I wish they didn't, but I feel stuck now. The little one can jump up all by herself, so it's impossible to keep them out.

  3. My cat tries to sleep with us, but she wants to sleep on our heads. NOT cool. I am with you, beds are better pet free!

  4. We have never let our dog sleep on our bed, though I have been tempted. He would keep me so warm and is the greatest snuggler ever! But, instead he sleeps on his dog bed in the bedroom closet. He loves his bed. I think that even if we did invite him into our bed he would only lay there for a few minutes before getting up and going to his closet.

  5. Do kids count as pets? I never understood letting the kids sleep in your bed...as an all the time thing...every once in a while because of a bad dream is ok. But then the kids get bigger and they hog the bed. I now have layers of blankets and a comforter on my floor next to my bed. If they get scared in the night, they sleep there. I am too selfish to share my space. ;)

  6. I am glad your are taking you space back.

Pet sleeping in the same place as me is no, no... I don't have pets but my sisters-in-law had some dogs and it was hard for me to sit in the sofa after the dog have been there.

I love animals but the have to have their own space from me.

  8. Guilty. I am such a sucker when it comes to my doggies. Only one sleeps on the bed, the other sleeps on the floor next to our bed on his bed.

  9. Haha! This is good, especially because I am single, and one of my dogs sleeps with me. But when I had my boyfriend, the dog would sleep in his own bed, and would be giving me the "so you are kicking me to the curb" look. Eventually, we let him in the bed...and well, you described the rest above on your post :) By the way, this is my first time visitng your blog and it wont be the last, I can tell!

  10. We are firm believers in the pack mentality and putting yourself in the "Alpha" role so our pup is not allowed on any of the furniture. Which works out for everyone. No dog hair everywhere (he sheds like no one's business). And since he is a Corgi (short legs, long back) there is no worrying about him hurting his back from all that jumping.

  11. We let our dog sleep with us -- she sleeps at the foot of the bed usually. If we're having "private time," we just lock her out and she's fine with that.

  12. Nope! No pets in our bed! It always sort of grossed me out to be honest! I wish she would not go on the couches either but she is getting old and that is what she loves. So I am sort of a sucker!

  13. We got our pup after the boirth of our first child so she has never slept in bed with us. I'm sure she would jump at the chance if we let her, but nope to the bad doggy breath for us!

  14. We live in a three floor rental house, and our bedroom is on the third floor (I don't know how you count floors over there, maybe it's easier to say there are two stairs?) Anyway, our dog hates stairs, so she can't get to our bedroom (convenient!). We put her in her bench to sleep right from the start and now it's her cosy place. She never bothered sleeping somewhere else. Friends in our street let her sleep in their bed (along with their two own dogs) when we're on holiday, but she never ever asked to do that here. She sleeps in her bench all the time.
She never even jumps on the couch: she's only allowed to do so if there's a blanket for her, or if it's on our lap. So she comes asking to be on our laps, putting one little pat on your leg to ask permission to jump on. Cute!
