A frugal friday tip from you to your spoiled pup:)

I feed our puppy Lealu dry Holistic dog food that looks like the above-  but I love to spoil her so I always put some kind of little treat in there with it, whether its a little peanut butter or an actual dog treat. Well the other day I ran out of doggy treats AND at the same time if you can believe it, peanut butter! So whats a puppy parent to do? I remembered that a few weeks back I had gone to the local butcher (yes we still have those in NYC) and I asked if they had any extra bones they could give me for our pup. They gave me a huge one, I think it was like a shoulder bone or a hip bone or something from a cow cause this was so big, he had to cut it in half. He gave me the two pieces of bone, that had a tiny bit of meat on them. I thought, if I cooked them up I could take off the tiny bits of meat and give her that in her food. Then I noticed something, something amazing. When I boiled the bones in the water, it created bits of oil in the water (I'm guessing this is a mix of fat/nutrients from the bone).  So I got experimental. I took the bones out and put them in the freezer as a treat for her later on. And I took the pot and put it in the fridge. A few hours later, the oil solidified in the pot and made these little solid circles. I didn't know if she'd like them or not, so I put just a little spoonful with a circle of the solid stuff in wit her dry food, and she loved it! She downed that stuff like she was me and the food was a nonfat chai from Starbucks:) (I've tried to curb my addiction and it just aint happenin')

I totally recommend this frugal tip, your puppy will LOVE it and feel so special that you put something extra yummy in with her or his dog food!   Please feel free to email me at thereallifetravels@yahoo.com if you'd like to guest post a Frugal Tip for Frugal Tip Friday.

  2. Well, if you've seen the recent photos of our baby girl hanging all over the pup, you know he deserves all the treats he can get. I'm sure he'd enjoy this. Good blog, nikki. Hope you guys have a great weekend, and that most of the snow doesn't make it that far north.

  4. i put a tablespoon of olive oil in my dog's food or an egg. maybe not so frugal but it makes her coat shine and it helps her eat all her food too.

  5. That sounds interesting, I'll have to try that. Usually when I make a roast or a broth based soup, I pour a little of the juices over their dry food. They go crazy! It's nice to spoil them in little ways.
